Reflections of the Soul with BolaKaraoke and my show is moving times!
Thankfully, I'm home alone after a long emotional weekend. Time to think, time to veg, and time to make some Reflections of the Soul. I'm taking some time to listen to the smooth harmonies of Boys II Men, to meditate on the lyrics of Alicia Keys, and to gain strength from the power of Mary J. Blige. Many turn to R & B and Soul to help them get through the difficult times in life. Starting next week, you can turn to me, BolaKaraoke...

BolaKaraoke in New York
Was in New York for the weekend! From the pizza, to the subways, from the incredible amount of wealth, to the unexplainable poverty - the city was amazing! One unforgettable moment was when I was riding the subway from Williamsburg/Brooklyn to Manhattan. All of a sudden, some young men get up from their seats and start doing this intricate and theatrical step performance. The guys were fabulous and I had to give them a buck for their troubles. The thing that tripped me out the most, was not this random act of dancing, but it was the fact that no one flinched. All 40-some people on the subway acted like nothing was happening, just continued to read their books, listen to their i-pods and be about their business. I had heard that New Yorkers were "hardened" and "unemotional" but this was just plain cliche.
When it came to our stop, the dancers got off at the same time. One of them caught up to me and said, "hey, thanks for smiling" before he ran off to get on the next train for his next performance.
In true un-New Yorker fashion, I smiled again.

Karaoke Killings? Seriously people, karaoke is about love...
I'm distressed to hear about continued violence surrounding karaoke establishments around the world. Karaoke is about about love, not fighting, not death. I dedicate all the songs I sing this weekend to peace among the karaoke community. In the words of John Lennon, Give Peace a Chance.

Infatuation
I sang Rod Stewart's "Infatuation" at Alibi Lounge (Karaoke Bar) the other night. I had zero liquor in my system, I was catching a cold and my cousins who hate karaoke were with me. The KJ called me to the stage and I walked up to the stage just wanting to get it over with. As I took the mic and the familiar guitar intro began to play, a sweet spirit brushed over my hips... Suddenly, my curves began to gyrate, my shoulders began to shake and a smile came to my glossed lips.
"Infatuation", I sang...
A few people in the audience began to clap, my hips were now swinging (violently) from side to side.
"Infatuation," I sang...
That's what singing does. It takes a bad situation and turns it good. It turns lemons in to lemon drops with extra vodka. Karaoke can turn the biggest critic into a fame hungry Cher impersonator. Really - I've seen this happen. A wise man once said, "Never underestimate the power of Karaoke".
A wiser woman (me) once said, "Karaoke is not about singing well, it's about loving to sing."

No more KJing at Grand Ave
Quick announcement that as of last Thursday I no longer host karaoke at Grand Cafe!!! Yes, my karaoke dj career was short lived, but let's just say the management and I didn't see eye to eye. No worries though, I will still be live on the radio every Wednesday Night at 7pm and can be found at local Karaoke bars across the PDX area! I'm still looking forward to using my karaoke talents as karaoke dj one day soon. I suppose the saga must continue...
